KCH Mission Statement
King’s Children Home is committed to assisting children from difficult circumstances, thereby helping them to become healthy, upright and productive citizens.
About KCH
King’s Children Home is a private, non-profit organization dedicated to help and to provide residential care for children in difficult circumstances regardless of their social status, culture, race or religious belief. The Home is located on the outskirts of Belmopan, which is the capital and business center of Belize, Central America.
KCH was started in August of 1985 by then Miss Leonie Herrera, a dedicated lady with a dream. Mrs. Herrera-Gillham is a committed Christian, and her Home is run based on Christian principles, compassion, love and sensitivity. Through her work as a teacher, she often came into contact with children who had been abandoned, abused or neglected by their parents or guardians. Over the years, she has become well respected in the community and children are brought to her care either through social services, schools or the police. The home is supported through donations primarily from North America. There is little to no support locally.
On average there are 50 children in residence at KCH. Many of them have come from very difficult circumstances. Presently, there are 47 children in the home, ranging in ages from newborn to 21 year olds. There is one child living at the home who is legally blind. Not only does KCH offer shelter and the basic necessities of life, but most importantly, there is unconditional love and support that many of these children have never experienced. Leonie knows first-hand what many of these children have gone through.
“What hurts the most is that the same people who are supposed to protect, love and care for you are the same ones who abuse you and let you down.” This is an excerpt from Leonie’s draft autobiography.
KCH believes that each child has the right to an adequate standard of living, to healthcare, to an education and to be treated without discrimination. KCH maintains a family setting where children develop emotionally sound and secure in a Christian environment.
Over the years, Leonie has watched with pride as many of the KCH children have graduated higher education. They have also achieved their own personal goals. None of this would have been possible without the guidance and love from Leonie. Her determination to change the lives of these children is apparent and her faith is what drives her and holds these children dear to her heart.
