KCH Building Project

The present home is in dire need of repairs and there is little space for the children to grow and flourish. The building is old, the rooms are crowded, the space is ‘tired’ and there is little to no space for the children to play or study in a quiet space. It is no longer suitable to raise a large ‘family’.

In 2008, the Board of Directors agreed to begin plans to build a new home for KCH. With the generous contributions from donors across North America, KCH was able to purchase 40 acres of arable land in the village of Cotton Tree just 8 miles from the current location. This was indeed an answer to prayers.

In January 2009 we began to clear the land and locate the best site to build the home. We were elated when water came pouring out of the first site that was dug for the well. This will sustain the needs of the home – output is 30 gallons per minute!

Even Leonie gets in on it! Our vision is to provide the children of KCH with a home that is suitable to their growing needs. A playground, a vegetable garden, a sewing room, bedrooms that sleep four, sustainable water system, etc. etc. The children are very excited about the new beginnings and have been involved in the plans from day one. Their excitement is energizing, “this is our home and we want to be part of the build!” Local construction crews will be hired but we will also rely on numerous volunteers from Belize, United States, Canada and other countries to assist with the build.

Currently we have a volunteer team (all professionals in this field) working on the design of the building both inside and out. Leonie is involved in every step – we want to keep the design fitting with the culture and needs. We are hoping to have the design completed in a few months.

The dream is to have the home completed by the end of 2010. We must emphasize this is a dream as everything depends on raising the funds necessary for every aspect of the build including the furnishings.
